Venetian Snares – My Love Is A Bulldozer

Planet Mu

Venetian Snares – My Love is a BulldozerDownstairs, Grandpa’s listless hand lowered the needle. He reclined. His chair was as starchy soft as the scratched record’s hiss. Sister Rosetta flowed above that sound as the Decca spun.

The hiss faded as the music warmly flooded the hallway, and only she got to the top of the stairs. The bathroom light, faulty, pinged and zapped above Rosetta’s mellifluous tones, making Freddy’s ear occasionally twitch.

Freddy’s puffy bitten right hand was closed around a dirty cup of water. In his other he grasped an unscrewed rizla, pills in its centre. His television, black and white, reflected across the hall in the bathroom mirror, seemed to depict a still image — until a hand moved, and a

Snares – Sabbath Dubs

Kriss

Sanres - Sabbath Dubs Donning a swift alter-ego for a heavyweight re-rendering of a pair of Black Sabbath classics, Aaron Funk proves that he’s as adept at the dub(step) as he is at splattery digital grinds when the Venetian part is elided from his Snares moniker. It also comes as no surprise that the record should appear on Bong-Ra‘s label Kriss, given his [post=”bong-ra-grindkrusher” text=”penchant for mashing up old-school grindcore in a breakcore style”] himself.

One for stoners of both the rock and dub variety everywhere, the lovely marbled green 10″ vinyl heaves with heaviosity, the splicing of “Black Sabbath” with wobble-bass is one reggification which works on so many levels, and it sounds like the tune was made for splicing into a dubstep haze of clattery drums and earth-shuddering low end. Funk’s bassline follows the original so closely that it’s

Venetian Snares – Rossz Csillag Alatt Született

Label: Planet Mu Format: CD,2LP

Rossz Csillag Alatt Született - sleeve detailIf anything is going to show the diversity and breadth of Aaron Funk‘s talent, Rossz Csillag Alatt Született should. Taking a breather between bouts of full-tilt Breakcore insanity for a little lighter – but not lightweight – electrical string-led conceptualising, this album is nothing less than a meditation on what it would be like to be a pigeon living atop the Királyi Palota royal palace in Budapest. Featuring orchestral compositions as the basis for each of the eleven pieces on the album, Rossz Csillag Alatt Született (try ordering that in a shop in a non-Hungarian-speaking country for a fun way to break the ice) floats on high with a beady eye for detail in the shimmering textures which draw a strangely compelling picture as life as what many regard as little better than

Venetian Snares – Songs About My Cats

Label: Planet µ Format: CD

Songs About My Cats - sleeve detailC(l)attery digital songs for cats from Mr Aaron Funk, Esq., of Winnipeg, Canada. Featuring an opener which sets the pace with eerie wails which don’t sound feline as such, but might once have done so, and they certainly make more recognizable guest appearances later. Dastardly electronic Jazz like Squarepusher was or AFX can be; slippery as a kitten and twice as playful, Songs About My Cats skips merrily on its way from beat to piano plonking to noisy squirms chasing after an unravelling piece of thread. Not having a cat to play this record to (for shame!), the dog will have to do. As with most things musical, she apparently ignored it, despite the tasty high frequency trills shivering their very digital way off the keyboard and through the upper reaches.

The drum
