Microstoria – Improvisors

Label: Sonig Format: LP

Recorded live by Markus Popp and Jan WernerImprovisors takes their studio-bound sampoling, glitching, cutting and skipping CDs into an edgier space. As ever, the estranged whirr of motor-driven sound put in its place and then removed again makes for distracted listening. Sometimes it even becomes uncomfortably ripped from the context of linear sound. They push it into one shape, and it comes out another.

The stutter of effects and source recombine on each other with the fragmented grace of something lurking in the machines like the animists would have assumed in any case. What do memes sound like in any case? Especially when they’ve been isolated and halved, quesrtered, randomised like this.

The process becomes secondary to the enveloping reaches of abstracted results – a sound plucked from the innards resembles nothing so much as itself more often than not. It is possible that, having heard one Microstoria record, it would be easy to consign them to their own niche in the music section of the Library of Babel marked “warm glitches”; but still, each new release makes perfect sense somehow. As the little differences, progressions and interpretations glance sideways off each other to subtly shift the sound into wafts and occasion recognition, it all makes sense eventually.
