How to make a milk shake, the Laboratory Of Sonic Discovery way:

  1. Ingredients:
    • Milk, soya or otherwise as preferred;
    • Vanilla ice cream or non-dairy substitute;
    • Soft fruit such as bananas or strawberries;
    • 1 litre jug (preferrably non-shatter or plastic);
    • CD player;
    • Amplifier;
    • The largest speakers available, preferably with a rating of 100 watts per channel or more;
    • 7 Songs/77 Frequencies CD
  2. Method:
    • Warn neighbours that a milkshake is being prepared;
    • Place CD in player connected to amplifier;
    • Place milk, ice cream and fruit in jug on top of one speaker, or both stacked together for faster results. Make sure the speakers are connected to the amp! Stir the contents of the jug together briefly;
    • Press “play” on CD player and keep a safe distance from the sound sources as there is some danger of hearing impairment in extreme situations;
    • Bring the volume of the amp to as high a level as possible, keeping an eye on the milk jug to ensure it does not move off the speakers, or shatter. Broken glass is almost as dangerous as extremes of low and high frequencies;
    • Listen to the rise in sine wave tones from 25 Hz to 253 HZ in 3 Hz incremenets, adjusting volume to avoid ear or glass jug damage. The tones generated can be found to be organised into seven songs, which may be varied by the use of a shuffle function on the CD player to produce different densities of milkshake from smoothie to chunky. The shuffling tones, gurgles and clicks along the way should provide a good indicator of time elapsed and the consequent stage of preparation for cooks familiar with the CD after some experience of this recipe has been formed. They are an inherent function of the audio blender and need not be discarded or ignored.
  3. Results:After a while, the liquid and fruit should be homogenised together by the sheer volume and density of sound waves – the lower end will make the intial mix, and the high frequencies should be used to complete the desired level of smotthness. When the shake is at the correct consistency, pour into a glass, sit back, and enjoy with the remainder of the CD.Note: While this may be tried at home, do take care when preparing this recipe. Children should ensure adult supervision at all times, and the use of a large PA system in a suitable auditorium may be found to produce better results.
